The annual Bon Festival takes place from August 13th to the 16th. The souls of the dead are believed to return to their families during the festival.
Toro-nagashi(灯籠流し) is the last event of the Bon festival held in many areas. People float paper lanterns down the river or the sea to send off the spirit of their ancestors.

Miyazu Toro-nagashi(宮津灯籠流し, Toro Lantern Floating) has a history of 400 years.
At the first Bon Festival following the death of a family member, the bereaved carry a decorated boat Shoro-bune(精霊船) to the venue of fireworks on August 16.
The boats and paper lanterns are floated down the sea 1.5 hours before the firework festival starts.
The boats are burned down at sea.
