fireworks festivals (3)

It's brutally hot. We have been lacking sleep lately because of the heat. Shimanto City in Kochi Prefecture eached 40.7 degrees Celsius on the 10th.

Kumagaya is known for being one of the hottest areas in summer in Japan.
Kumagaya City in Saitama Prefecture and Tajimi City in Gifu Prefecture reached 40.9 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature in Japan in August 2007.

This event started to cheer up victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Fireworks will be launced at 15 venues in Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima prefectures. In Tohoku Region, several fireworks festivals have not been held after the quake.

The annual Bon Festival takes place from August 13th to the 16th. The souls of the dead are believed to return to their families during the festival.

Toro-nagashi(灯籠流し) is the last event of the Bon festival held in many areas. People float paper lanterns down the river or the sea to send off the spirit of their ancestors.

At the first Bon Festival following the death of a family member, the bereaved carry a decorated boat Shoro-bune(精霊船) to the venue of fireworks on August 16.

The boats and paper lanterns are floated down the sea 1.5 hours before the firework festival starts.
